Name That Blend
February 14, 2008 by muddydogcoffee
So we’ve had a few suggestions on the “Name that Blend” post, but none of them have completely risen to the top, in my opinion. I think there were some good themes, and I’m in no particular hurry, so I thought I would give the topic its own page to try and stimulate the discussion. I thought I would also raise the stakes - winner of the contest gets a five pounds of the new blend. And some pens.
So I have to say that I like the mountain theme that’s emerging. Blue Ridge… something, something… has potential. Sometimes the names come to me first, sometimes it’s the flavor profile that pops into my head and inspires a name. With a mountain theme (and I’m not saying we have to stick with that theme, I just said that I like it), I start asking myself “what should I taste”? That leads me in a couple directions. One is “crisp” like mountain air - a clean cup with a light body and not much of a lingering aftertaste. The other direction is comfort food - a cold mountain morning with your hands wrapped around a warm mug of something big and bold, earthy and comforting. So you see how this works…
So I am hoping to get some of those original suggestions refined, and some new ones, too. Tell me what you think about when you hear the name of your special blend… how would you expect it to taste?

Jim,
I love the name of your company and think that you should stick with that theme. I personally would name my coffee products after dogs like Buddy, Buster, Daisy, Katie, Coco etc. I like to tie things up into nice little packages and this fits the bill!
Best wishes and keep roasting
It’s been a little while, and most of the feedback I get on this is either via email, or face-to-face.
A winner is emerging, but not finalized. The working name is “Rutherford Roast”, based on Rutherford County, home of Chimney Rock and Bat Cave, NC (and has a better ring than the Buncombe Blend). I’m working on a straight coffee (drip, press pot, etc), and an espresso version.
Keep the ideas coming!
You couldn’t send me the coffee even if I won!
My coffee that I blended and roasted was called “handfull”.
I share your thoughts on naming coffees - pure and simple, with a twist. Actually, I prefer the one word names. In terms of your blends, I recommend simply “pleated”. The more tart taste would benefit from a name such as “pucker” (market and appeal). Throwing my name into the hat for recommendations, I recommend the name: Crescent.
