Us with the Smiths

Our shipment of Kona arrived from the Big Island yesterday! We are offering 100% Smithfarms Kona, from the estate of Bob and Cea Smith. Their farm overlooks the Captain Cook bay from an elevation of 1500 feet. Bob uses all natural and sustainable methods (no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides) to produce their exquisite coffee. We think it’s the best on the island!

I roast mine a little differently than Bob does… Bob uses a Sivetz-style hot air roaster and goes to the first crack. I use a drum roaster and take it almost to second crack; this seems to result in just a little more body and a little less “nip” in the cup. Both roast styles are excellent, however, and this is such a special coffee that I will custom roast it to your desired finish… just tell me how you would like it done in the comments section when you checkout.

Bob RoastingBob RoastingBob RoastingI’m planning to do a post about our recent trip to Hawaii, where we visited with the Smiths. One of these days. Meanwhile, I’ll use this post to point you to the Kona Coffee Farmers Association (KCFA) and tell you about an important legislative opportunity (battle?) going on there right now. The KCFA is trying to convince the legislature to require any coffee labeled “Kona Blend” to contain at least 75% Kona. If you have visited Hawaii recently, you understand what a potential problem the proliferation of high priced, yet crappy “Kona Blend” coffee poses to the industry. There are about 650 family Kona farmers on the island, please support them in this effort.
